Arena Retrospective #009: Genoa's Arrest
<JETMODE> *A few days after the dragon caused so much chaos at the Arena, things have calmed down.. if only a little. Tempo's infirmary is getting a little bit of overflow from the hundreds of wounded, but it's not as bad. One room is utterly untouched by the confusion, save for the fact that there are four guards posted nearby, keeping round-the-clock watch on its occupant. <JETMODE> *Genoa herself has been unconscious for the better part of the time, and only now has she begun to stir, murmuring vaguely in her sleep. <TIAMAT> *Not long after she starts to come awake, Teal, receiving a message from Tempo himself that she who summoned the dragon is finally coming around, barges into the infirmary, looking grim and a little annoyed. He pauses, spotting the healer on the far side of the room, and marches up to him. "Tempo. She's awake?" <JETMODE> <Tempo> Getting there. Go on back, she should be just about ready for you. *turns back to his desk* <TIAMAT> *Teal nods curtly and turns, heading down to her room. The guards straighten sharply at his approach, saluting, and he nods absently to them as he pushes the door open. <JETMODE> *Genoa, it seems, hasn't quite regained consciousness, but at the sound of the door opening, she sits up abruptly, looking around in confusion. "Ah.." <TIAMAT> *Teal slams the door behind him, approaching the bed slowly and pausing at the foot of it, crossing his arms and glaring at Genoa. "Genoa Rivermarch." <JETMODE> *She looks up at him curiously, still disoriented. "I am." <TIAMAT> *Teal scowls at her. "Genoa Rivermarch, you're under arrest for the damage and destruction caused to the Arena in the battle three days past, and for the numerous deaths -- which are too many to name here and now -- and injuries as a result of that battle." <JETMODE> *Genoa stares at him. "The dr.. oh!" She looks down at her hands, bemused. "It worked." <TIAMAT> *Teal scowls again, glaring near-murderously at Genoa for a moment before barking to the guards outside the door, and they scramble inside, looking nervous. "Take her away -- down to solitary!" <JETMODE> <Genoa> Ah.. <TIAMAT> *Before she can get much more out, two of the guards dart forward, grab her by the arms, pin them to her side and drag her out of bed and toward the door, with one of the remaining guards leading and the last falling in behind. Teal marches out behind them, looking considerably irritated. <JETMODE> *Tempo watches them go idly, waving a farewell to Teal, but before they've quite left the infirmary, Genoa manages to speak again. "I don't suppose -- I could have a change of clothes?" <TIAMAT> *Teal nods to Tempo as he passes, then turns back to Genoa, gritting his teeth and shoving her a little out the door to get her moving faster. "No." <JETMODE> *Genoa stumbles, annoyance flickering across her features. "Fine then." And she starts to walk as rapidly as she can. <TIAMAT> *Teal snorts and quickens his own pace, while the two guards on either side of her stumble very slightly to keep up to her. All the way back downstairs -- they get everal strange and a few fearful looks along the way -- and into the solitary wing they lead her, and Teal pushes her again, into a cell near the end of the corridor, slamming the door behind her and locking it. He glares through the small barred window at her. <TIAMAT> *Teal: You will remain here until a date for your trial is set. *slight pause* You'll be delivered some clean clothes before the day of the proceedings. *And he turns to go, the guards following in his wake. <JETMODE> *Genoa sniffs and stalks over to the cot, sitting down on it and pulling her legs up to her chest. <TIAMAT> *For the next two days, the solitary wing remains almost deathly silent, the only sound coming from when a guard comes to deliver Genoa's food and when the end of shift comes every evening and every morning. On the morning of the third day, the new shift comes, as per usual, but is followed closely by more footsteps, these growing closer, until the shadowy form of Devan Teal appears outside her door. <TIAMAT> *He doesn't look at her through the window this time, instead unlocking and opening the door, taking half a step inside and holding out a bundle of clothes for her. "Change. There are things to discuss when you've finished." <JETMODE> *She glances up at him, then stands lazily, snatching the clothes from him. "It's about time -- I was beginning to think your men were just enjoying the view." <TIAMAT> *Teal steadies a dark glare on her before turning and walking out, shutting and locking the door behind him and stepping out of view. <JETMODE> *Genoa pauses, making sure he's gone, then changes quickly, almost flinging the shift at the door when she's finished, then pausing. "You can come back now, I'm decent." <TIAMAT> *Teal steps back in front of the door, gazing evenly at her through the barred window and reciting blandly. "Your trial will be one week from today. Is there anything or anyone you need to help in your defense?" <JETMODE> *She pauses a moment, then throws the shift at the window. "Why would I need a defense?" She sniffs. "I summoned the dragon." <TIAMAT> *Teal doesn't flinch. "Fine. I still need to ask you some questions about that, though. *slight pause* Where did it come from?" <JETMODE> <Genoa> *shortly* I don't know. The book said he was sleeping under the Arena, but it didn't go into specifics. *folds her arms and sits down* <TIAMAT> *Teal: Which book? <JETMODE> <Genoa> I don't remember! It's probably still in my room. One of the old histories, back before the Cataclysm. <TIAMAT> *Teal nods shortly. "Fine. The dragon -- what else do you know about it, does it have a name? <JETMODE> *She's silent for a moment, staring down at her lap. "His name is Jajara," she says finally. "As far as I know, he's the last of the Great Dragons and inordinately proud of that fact." <TIAMAT> *Teal pauses almost thoughtfully for a moment. "And you...used necromancy to reincarnate him? Was there anyone working with you?" <JETMODE> <Genoa> Feh, working with me? Don't be foolish. <TIAMAT> *Teal: Then tell me, how does a novice shadow mage manage to raise a Great Dragon? The necromancers I've talked to have all said they'd never try it themselves. <JETMODE> <Genoa> *sharply* I didn't raise him. He wasn't really dead. Just.. asleep. <TIAMAT> *Teal, blandly: You still haven't answered my question. Didn't you use necromancy? How did you summon him? <JETMODE> <Genoa> *drily* I asked him nicely if he'd like to come up for tea. <TIAMAT> *Teal scowls. "Your witty banter is not amusing, Rivermarch." <JETMODE> <Genoa> No? That's such a pity. *gets to her feet and wanders over to the shift, which she scoops up off the floor* I modified a summoning spell from one of the books -- you might want to get that and give it back to my teacher while you're at it. I'm not supposed to have it. *folds arms* Using that allowed me to knock on the door so to speak. <JETMODE> <Genoa> And, to answer your next question, it worked out perfectly -- exactly like I planned -- which is why I was lying there unconscious while he was doing whatever it was he was doing that caused all the blood and screaming. <TIAMAT> *Teal: We're so very glad you're pleased with the outcome. .. Do you have any communication with him? Any kind of telepathic link, like necromancers do with their charges? <JETMODE> <Genoa> *glares at him suddenly* No! Now go away, why don't you and leave me in peace! I wish you idiots would sentence me and get it over with. <TIAMAT> *Teal, flatly: That will come soon enough, Rivermarch. .. I'll see you in a week. *He turns and marches back up the hall, his echoing footsteps fading as he ascends back up the stairs. <JETMODE> <Genoa> *barks* It'll be too SOON! *turns and stalks back to her cot* |
